I have been wanting to talk to you about SEO for a long time. If I've built you a website or not, I want to provide you with some actionable steps that you can take to improve your SEO.

Improve Your SEO With Your Images

One of the first, and easiest ways that you can increase your SEO is to make sure that the images on your site are titled in such a way that 1. They are accessible to screen readers and, 2. They include your name or your business name. For instance, I have this photo on my site of a computer. So I have it titled, Computer-on-Desk-Laurie-Jacobsen-Design-+-Mentoring. So that if someone can't see the image they will know what it is and also having my name on it increases the SEO.

Improve Your SEO By Creating Quality Content and Blogging

Google rewards sites that update their content. So, even if you don't blog, make sure that you're keeping your site up to date with fresh information. Make sure that people landing on your site know what's happening in your business RIGHT NOW. If you do blog, make sure that your blog title is phrased in a way that someone Google-ing what that post is about would find it. Also use your headings and subheadings (as I have done in this post) as a way to have google-able content and using your sites key words.

Improve Your SEO With Your Site Title + Description

A super simple way to improve your SEO is to make sure that you have your site title filled in as your name or the name of your business. Your site description is what Google uses to display when your business is Googled. My site title is, “Laurie Jacobsen Design & Business Mentoring” and my description is below. 160 characters or fewer is what's allowed. I recommend using them, but also short and sweet gets the point across. Here is mine:

Improve Your SEO With Page Descriptions

Add your site's SEO (or an appropriate version of it) to each page in your website. I take my main SEO paragraph and then tweak it slightly so that it's page appropriate.

Improve Your SEO with Inbound Links

  • Being a guest blogger on someone's site is a great way to create inbound links.

  • Posting your content to Pinterest is another way.

  • Collaborate with another business that will blog and include your site.

  • Getting featured on high quality sites.

  • Incorporate social sharing links in your blog posts.

I hope that these very actionable steps will help you to feel better about improving your own SEO without having to hire an expensive “expert.” I would love to hear your comments about this post or about your experience with implementing these steps!

Yours in gorgeous design,

Laurie
